Santa Pod

Sunday, January 22nd - Podington Northamptonshire

Did you know that tomorrow is the most depressing day of the year?  3 weeks after the holidays and everyone drags.....

Bored as hell and needing a reason to get off of the couch I struck out to Santa Pod for the RWYB drags.  The Pod is the UK's oldest drag strip and this weekend is "Run What You Brung".  As you'll see from the pictures everything from a plain Jane Honda Civic to a privateer Skyline ran.
I resisted the urge to take the company whip out for a thrashing.  "Get ready folks!  Here comes a 2.0 liter, diesel station wagon!"

The strip its self is carved out of a WWII USAAC airfield, RAF Podington.

It was cold, and while (some of) the engines ran well, most cars struggled to hook up.

AMERICA (fuck yeah)!  I was amazed that with over 600 horsepower this little pickup just dipped into the low 11's.

It just proves that horespower is only part of the equation.

I'm no expert, but I think the car in the near lane is a '87 Ford Capri.

The poor guy in the Subaru didn't stand a chance, even with the GTR's slow reaction time and wheelspin.  After a few runs he got his reaction time down to a respectable .369.

Only the Skyline and a couple of BMW's were rear wheel drive.  By the time I left, frozen and ready for a beer, he got down to an 11.57sec quarter at 118mph.

An unexpected sight on the way out was the 92 Bombardment Group memorial.  The 92nd flew B-17 heavy bombers during WWII, B-29 Superfortresses in Korea and are now the 92nd Air Refuel wing out of Washington.

I think I'll get a hold of them and offer to get them a new flag.

In another fantastic coincidence... As we speak I'm sitting at home watching Led Zepplin - The Song Remains The Same.

Too early for Bourbon?
